Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.

I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

A yearning to be near God is in fact a yearning to be like Him. It is the yearning of the ransomed heart to be like God so that there can be perfect communion—so the heart and God can come together in divine fellowship.

There is a similarity that makes it compatible and proper for God to commune with His children, even the poorest and weakest of his born-again children. However, there are dissimilarities as well, and those dissimilarities are such that there is not the degree of fellowship there ought to be.

There is not a perfection of the sense of God’s presence that we want and yearn for and pray for and sing about. How are we going to know what God is like so that we may know whether we are like God?

The answer is simple: God is like Christ, for Christ is God. Christ is God manifested to mankind. Our focus needs to be on Jesus. By looking at our Lord Jesus, we will know what God is like; and then we will know what we have to be like if we are going to experience the unbroken and continuous presence of God.

Oft I hear a gentle whisper o’er me stealing,

When my trials and my burdens seem too great;

Like the sweet-voiced bells of evening softly pealing,

It is saying to my spirit, “Only wait.”
